What to track before you spend another dollar on ads
Short answer: before you increase ad spend, make sure you can see which ads produce real calls, form inquiries and booked appointments. Without that, the ad platform optimizes for whatever it can see, which is often clicks or junk leads, and you cannot tell what is working.
What should a health, wellness or fitness business track?
- 1. Phone calls from ads and from your website. For many practices and studios, calls are the main way people book. Track calls from ads and calls from your site separately, and only count calls above a minimum length.
- 2. Form inquiries. Track the confirmation or thank-you page, not the button click, so failed or abandoned submissions do not count.
- 3. Online bookings. If you use an online scheduler, track completed bookings, not visits to the booking page.
- 4. Booked and attended appointments. This is the outcome that pays the bills. Record where each new patient or client came from, and when possible, send that information back to Google or Meta so their bidding learns from real results.
Google Analytics 4 should record the same key events, so you can compare ads with organic search, your Google Business Profile and social media in one place.
What are the most common tracking mistakes?
- Double counting. Several conversion actions measure the same thing, so one inquiry counts two or three times. This was the core problem in our 35% lower cost per lead case study.
- Counting clicks as conversions. A click on "call" or "book" is not a call or a booking.
- No call tracking at all, which makes phone-heavy businesses look like their ads do not work.
- Tracking that broke after a website change, and nobody noticed for months.
- No source on the booking. The appointment is in the system, but nobody knows whether it came from Google, Instagram or a referral.
How can I check my tracking in five minutes?
- Open your Google Ads conversions list. Is there exactly one primary action for each real thing a person does?
- Compare last month's conversions in Google Ads with the actual new inquiries your team handled. Are they close?
- Ask your front desk how many new patients or clients booked last month and where they came from. Can anyone answer?
If any answer is "no" or "not sure", fix tracking before raising your budget. It is the first step of every Foundation Sprint, and it is what makes your true cost per lead possible to see.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need call tracking for my med spa or clinic?
If a meaningful share of your bookings come by phone, yes. Without call tracking, ads that drive calls look like they produce nothing, and the platform cannot learn which searches bring real patients.
Is Google Analytics enough to track my ads?
Google Analytics 4 is an important part of tracking, but on its own it usually misses phone calls and the final booking. Most businesses need GA4 plus call tracking and a way to record where each booked appointment came from.
